The Holy Grail: when everything finally clicks
Hi there welcome back to this blog series. I admit I am extremely late with this month’s blog, life has been buzzing the last few months. I am excited for it all but also delighted to write this months blog
in this months blog I want to explore what I believe to the the holy grail for learning any language. It’s something can help but talk about. As you know I have been learning language for almost 7 years now and I recently reached a flow state with my German. There is nothing more gratifying than learning something for so long and finally reaching a point where everything finally clicks. With that being said let’s dive in.
So what is the holy grail, you ask? Well it’s quite simple really, it’s noticing patterns and using these patterns as the basis of understanding the language without having to dive too deep into grammar. It’s quite similar to the 80/20 rule (or Pareto Principle) where 80% of the progress comes from 20% of the effort. For the last few months, I have spent the vast majority of my time focusing on comprehensive input, in other words listening and absorbing the language in context with regards to my German language journey. I have learnt the proper use of normative, dative and accusative cases in German simply by observing these patterns in the content I consume. The beauty of this is I am now able to predict what sentence structures are without studying the grammar. I am sure once grammar comes into play everything will make perfect sense. I am still in the early stages of learning German and familiarizing myself with the language. So far I am using Busuu and a podcast called Stress Free German (highly recommend for beginners and anyone who has some experience with the language)
To say that this method is the holy grail is a bit of a reach, the reason why I see it as such is because anyone who reaches this stage usually has a better chance for having long term progress in their target language. I have first hand experience with this in both French and Italian, to have reached this stage in another language is beyond inspiring and incredible.. This was a rather short one. More longer pieces to come
Thank you so much for reading. I hope these words help inspire you on your language journey
