About the Author
Henrietta O is a poet and writer with a background in engineering and a passion for creative expression. As a self-taught creative, she weaves themes of healing, identity, self-worth, and spiritual awakening into her work. What the Silence Gave Me is her debut poetry collection, an offering of truth, tenderness, and transformation. When she’s not writing, Henrietta finds joy in introspection, meditation, art, music and the quiet beauty of the everyday.
About the collection
This collection began as a compilation of poems scattered across my diary (lovingly referred to as The Green Book), my laptop, and my phone, written from my early teens to my thirties. What started as a manuscript of 13 poems has now grown into something much more expansive.
These poems explore themes of self-worth, self-acceptance, and the many challenges we face in life—success and failure, love and grief, betrayal, spirituality and silence. Each piece is an offering to those who have ever carried a quiet yearning or struggled to accept themselves as they are, and to let go of the restrictive norms we are fed from a young age. These collections will help you feel seen, invite healing and bring clarity to your silence
I hope that these words provide encouragement, courage, and wisdom—and that they serve as a reminder that we are never truly alone on the path to wholeness.

Early Praise for What The Silence Gave Me
“Some of the most beautiful poetry I’ve ever read. Henrietta’s voice balances wisdom and illustration—she almost sounds like a deity. These poems took me to places I’ve been and showed me things I hadn’t seen before.
”
“A heartfelt and cohesive debut poetry collection that captures a journey of self-discovery and healing”
“A deep and raw journey through mental anguish, love, and healing. These poems expose emotions we often gloss over and guide us gently toward the light at the end of the tunnel.”
“A moving collection of poetry that captures grief and self-discovery.”
Working on the Collection
“This is where it all began. In the quiet, I met my pain. I didn’t have the words yet—just ache, and dead silence
”
I’ve always dreamt of publishing a book—in fact, it was one of my very first dreams as a child. Over the years, I have been encouraged by many people who believed in me. In June 2025, I finally sat down to create my first manuscript, which began with just 13 original poems. Since then, the collection has grown into something so much more. What The Silence Gave Me is a collection that I started in my mid-teens, to now as a 30-year-old.
The collection is divided into five acts:
Enter the Silence
Longing to Stillness
Truth and Reckoning
Becoming
Remembered by Love
Each part dives into the crucible of self-discovery through grief, remembrance and spiritual awakening.
Peek into the Silence……
Here is a taste of what to expect in the collection.
-
Incomplete
Perfection—
a poison we take,
a faith so cruel,
we didn’t choose. The heaven we seek
is buried
within thought, soul
and skin.Kill the lies.
Spread its ashes
to edge—
and end.The end.
Always,
the end. -
Liminal Spaces
Follow me
to the start—
to the space between then and now,
in the waiting,
in the becoming.I sit here
in silence,
in stillness,
in knowing.I feel the soil beneath my feet,
the heat on my brow,
the wind in my ears,
the shivers on my skin. The scent of you draws closer.
I watch the space between us collapse. Our souls align.
Longing stirs—
here,
in this moment. It won’t be long now
before we meet.So, I wait
in the silence of knowing,
in this space
between then and now. -
In the Deep
In the deep,
beneath ash and bones,
lies a soul—
a fleeting light,
a sacred abode.I saw the crows take flight
before you exhaled this life.Pain is but a visitor.
It haunts the silent hours,
creeps and crawls,
spreading thorns
that I slip into.As I anchor to this ship,
the heaviness is set.
I gasp for air
and beg for sleep.I sink into lamentation—
the edges wounding me as I fall,
the scabs, fresh and tender.
My tender heart
is made of frailty.I beg not for release.
Release is to forget.
To forget is to numb.
To numb is to die.
To die is the end.My pain, my life.
My pain, my truth.Carry me to another light—
a light coloured with remembrance,
where your greatness resides,
where the waters are still,
where a smile finds its place,
where joy is its purest form,
where all is fleeting,
where you will be
in the end.Until then, I will dream
and find solace at the table
in the stillness of Sunday morning.I will meet you there—
when all is said
and done. -
Enter
I find myself here—
looking back at the fog,
whose voice once hummed a sickly tune.
In a time when the rain fell,
greying the skies…
in a time when noise was my symphony,
when the moon was nowhere to be found,
when the nights were never still,
and my blood ran cold
with each breath I took.
I find myself here—
no longer rejecting the shadows.
I come alive every morn—
in the days when the sun blesses me
with vision and light,
in the days when the clouds are all I see,
yet weigh on me not,
in the days when no one sees me,
or speaks to me…
when the rain pitter-patters on the roof,
reminding me
of the distance there was
and the distance there is—
like the fog that lingers…
it blurs not the path,
yet it is never gone. -
Smile
Your smile,
the one I see.
Your laughter piercing the air—
I hear it so clearly.
I feel you around me,
near or far,
in silence and in sound.Your smile,
full of cheer and glee.
May our freedom never flee,
may our memories stay,
even when life leads us astray. In the early hours of night,
when the world weighs on my shoulders,
when all seems lost,
your smile returns—
your words, a gentle embrace.Through long talks,
we celebrate the wins and losses,
the beginning and end of love,
the deepening of our bond. And when we meet,
I feel renewed.
With a companion at my side,
words need not be spoken
to fill the silence there is.It’s you,
the one I need
so dearly.
Now I see it clearly—
I found a friend in you.
Thank you for reading. More like this will be in the collection. Stay tuned!!!
